How to Prepare for Your Physiotherapy Appointment?

Starting physiotherapy can feel a bit daunting, especially if it's your first time. But with a little preparation, you can make the most of your appointment and set yourself up for a successful recovery. Here's everything you need to know before walking through our doors.

Before Your Appointment

Gather Your Medical Information

Bring any relevant medical documents, including referral letters from your GP, imaging results like X-rays or MRI scans, and a list of current medications. If you've had previous physiotherapy or treatment for the same issue, those records can be invaluable in helping us understand your history.

Think About Your Symptoms

Take some time to reflect on your condition. When did the pain or problem start? What makes it better or worse? Are there specific activities you're struggling with? Jotting down a few notes can help you communicate clearly during your assessment, especially if you're nervous or forget details in the moment.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Choose loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. For lower body issues, shorts or loose trousers work well. For shoulder or upper back problems, a vest top or loose t-shirt is ideal. You may need to move around during the assessment, so wear something you can exercise in comfortably.

What to Bring

Your essentials checklist should include your insurance information if you're claiming through private health insurance, a list of questions or concerns you want to address, and any mobility aids you currently use, like a walking stick or brace.

Arrive Early

For your first appointment - plan to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time. This gives you a chance to complete any necessary paperwork, use the facilities if needed, and settle in without feeling rushed. Being relaxed at the start of your appointment helps us get better information during your assessment.

Set Realistic Expectations

Your first appointment is primarily an assessment. Your physiotherapist will ask detailed questions about your condition, medical history, and lifestyle. They'll perform physical tests to understand your movement patterns, strength, and flexibility. While some initial treatment may be provided, the first session is mainly about gathering information to create your personalized treatment plan.

Be Honest and Open

The more honest you are about your pain levels, limitations, and lifestyle habits, the better we can help you. If you're concerned about a particular movement or have fears about treatment, share them. If you've been struggling to do prescribed exercises from a previous therapist, let us know. We're here to work with you, not judge you.

Prepare Your Questions

Write down any questions you have about your condition, treatment options, recovery timeline, or exercises. It's easy to forget what you wanted to ask once the appointment begins. Common questions include: How long will recovery take? What can I do at home to help? Are there activities I should avoid?

After Your Appointment

Take notes or ask for written instructions about any exercises prescribed. Many patients find it helpful to take photos or videos of exercises to reference at home. Make sure you understand your home exercise program before leaving, and don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Remember, physiotherapy is a collaborative process. Your active participation, both during sessions and with home exercises, plays a crucial role in your recovery. By preparing properly for your appointment, you're already taking an important step toward better movement and reduced pain.

If you have any questions before your appointment, don't hesitate to contact our clinic. We're here to support you every step of the way on your journey to recovery.
