Deep Tissue Massage

Persistent muscle tension, trigger points, or pain that doesn't seem to shift on its own — deep tissue massage targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to release tension, reduce pain, and restore normal movement.

At Q Sports Physio, deep tissue massage is delivered by qualified soft tissue therapists across our three London clinics. Whether you're an active individual dealing with chronic tightness or recovering from a soft tissue injury, treatment is focused, effective, and adapted to your specific needs.

What Can Deep Tissue Massage Help With?

CHRONIC BACK & NECK PAIN

Sustained pressure on the deeper spinal and paraspinal muscles can reduce the chronic tension that contributes to persistent back and neck pain — particularly for people who sit for long periods.

TRIGGER POINTS & ADHESIONS

Deep tissue work directly targets the areas where muscle fibres have become adherent or knotted, releasing tension and restoring normal tissue function.

POSTURAL TENSION FROM DESK WORK

Prolonged sitting and screen use creates chronic tension through the upper back, neck, and shoulders. Deep tissue massage is highly effective at addressing these patterns.

SOFT TISSUE INJURY RECOVERY

Following a muscle tear or strain, scar tissue can form in a disorganised way that restricts movement and creates pain. Deep tissue techniques help to remodel scar tissue and restore normal function as part of injury rehabilitation.

HIP & LEG TIGHTNESS

The hip flexors, glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves are common areas of chronic tightness — whether from sport, exercise, or prolonged sitting. Deep tissue work addresses these areas effectively.

STRESS & PHYSICAL TENSION

Physical tension and stress are closely linked. Deep tissue massage addresses the muscular component of stress-related tension, particularly through the shoulders, neck, and upper back.

What Happens During a Deep Tissue Massage Session?

Before your session
Your therapist will ask about the areas you'd like to focus on, any current pain or injuries, and your activity level to ensure treatment is targeted to your needs.

During your session
Your therapist will work through the superficial muscle layers before applying deeper, sustained pressure to the target areas. Techniques are applied slowly and deliberately, with pressure adjusted throughout based on your feedback.

Some discomfort is normal during deep tissue work, particularly in areas of significant tension or adhesion. This should feel productive rather than painful, and your therapist will regularly check in with you throughout the session.

After your session
Some tenderness for 24–48 hours is normal, particularly after deeper work or your first session. Drink plenty of water and allow your body time to recover before intense exercise.

Sessions are available in 30, 45, and 60 minutes, although 45 or 60 minutes is generally recommended for deep tissue treatment.

What's the Difference Between Deep Tissue Massage and Sports Massage?

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE

Deep tissue is a technique. It refers to the application of slow, sustained pressure to access the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. It is highly effective for chronic tension and soft tissue pain, and can be delivered to anyone — athlete or no.

Deep tissue massage is ideal if you have chronic tension, back pain, or soft tissue pain and are not training for a specific sport or event.

SPORTS MASSAGE

Sports massage is a treatment approach tailored to athletes and active individuals. It combines techniques such as deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, and stretching to support performance, recovery, and injury prevention.

Sports massage is ideal if you are an active individual or athlete who wants treatment tailored to the physical demands of your sport.

WHICH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Choose deep tissue massage if you're dealing with chronic tension, stiffness, or general muscle pain not related to a specific sport.

Choose sports massage if you're training regularly, recovering from intense exercise, or want treatment tailored to the demands of your sport.

Not sure which is best? Our therapists will guide you during your first session.
